Thereafter she continued to offer her medical services for the duration of 2009 - 2010 by enrolling ARVs and managing HIV patients at the Helen Joseph Hospital through the Right to Care campaign as well as the Edendale Hospital ARV Clinic based in KwaZulu-Natal. Following this experience, Dr Makhubo began working as a Medical Officer at Edendale Hospital and presenting at Greys Hospital on a weekly basis.

While initially she struggled to conceive herself, 2 years later she was able to conceive without medical intervention. It is for this reason that Dr Bongi Makhubo felt compelled to pursue a career in gynaecology and obstetrics to aid women in the same position with her compassion, care and empathy. She began her experience in these fields gaining in-depth knowledge and hands-on expertise before attaining her Fellowship of College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (FCOG) as well as her Masters in Medicine (MMed O & G) with the University of Pretoria, of which her dissertation together with her supervisors was published in SAJOG in 2018.

Finally, with her own practice based at Klerksdorp Matlosana Mall Medical Suites, Dr Bongi Makhubo practises as a specialist gynaecologist and obstetrician with a special interest in infertility and maternity. In an empathetic, safe and supportive environment, she strives to provide women's health care using the latest innovations in diagnosis, treatment and management.
